My practice focuses on painting, typically in oil paint, where I take the well-known subject matter of flowers and express it through visually striking imagery within the oval. I seek to entice the viewer into a familiar, pictorial space intended for visual escapism; this feeling is then disrupted when the eye comes across a silhouette amongst the chaos. This intends to create a moment of questioning for said viewer.
The dominance of surface is questioned in a painterly sense and explored further in a social sense within my research. Plausibly we tend to fixate on our own surfaces; similarly, due to the painting being a traditional wall-based practice, the surface is often all we can perceive. However, I view the painting as an entire object, surface, edge, and frame. Each element is treated with the same amount of care and consideration. Correspondingly, I enjoy the display of palette alongside painting, as it gives an insight into process. Continuing from my Fine Art BA (Hons) completed at UCA Canterbury, I am working on my practice from home in Kent. I am continuously cultivating and refining my practice, exploring current and new techniques to do so. |
