Jeannie Clarke was born in Yorkshire and studied art in Newcastle upon Tyne.. A teacher and lecturer, she has been professional artist and muralist for over twenty years, exhibited widely throughout the UK and her company Great Escape Murals numbered the BBC amongst her many national and international clients. Now living in Kent she was a specialist Equestrian painter and artist in residence at a major racing stables on The North Downs. Her fascination with movement lead to working with dancers at Ndc(Wales) and Rambert Playground and an MA(Fine Art) at UCA Canterbury. She is currently Associate Visual Artist with Jasmin Vardimon Company in Ashford, exploring the human figure in contemporary dance choreography, working closely with the dance students in training and Company dancers in rehearsal. Current work Her most recent work, a series of large monochrome watercolour canvasses depicting dancers from Jasmin Vardimon in “contact” was first shown earlier this year at The Pie Factory Gallery in Margate. “Contact” involves the exploration of one’s body in relationship to others by using the fundamentals of sharing weight, touch and movement awareness. These points of contact become key elements in this series of monochrome watercolour paintings. The compositions are mapped out in charcoal on loose sheets of specially primed canvas and made working flat using only lamp-black pigment applied to selected areas. After careful layering and drying over several days, sections of the composition are removed with water and soft brushes in order to create multiple shades of black and white. The paintings appear in degrees of transparency and opacity. Like modern dance itself, the works create a continuum of movement and power as if everything is transitional. |
