Beverley Thornley
Collecting minerals directly from the land and using them to depict particular places and journeys is the bedrock of my current work. The place and materials take the lead. My role is one of collaboration, encouraging inanimate stuff to express its unique character and, maybe, tell us something about where it is from. My work takes various forms - land art, drawings, prints, glass, installation - as I seek to find different ways to work with the geological materials to reveal their unique energy and history. Stone in north Kent has been a focus of some of my recent work, often using chalk from the remaining pits here, or cement, the driving force behind the quarrying last century. Other work from Stone has been inspired by research into the origins of chalk and by memory workshops and walks with local people. beverleythornley.com |
