Alexandra Le Rossignol
Trained as a Theatre Designer in Birmingham, I was inspired by the vibrancy of the stained glass in Coventry Cathedral and failing to convey the quality of light in a model, began exploring glass. Doors opened and skills were acquired on the job, with the turning point being winning first prize in a competition run by The Worshipful Company of Glaziers and Painters in Glass and being mentored by the late great Lawrence Lee who had organised the glass at Coventry! Together with his help I produced two translucent panels for the Central Electricity Board at Sellindge in Kent and became a Freeman of the Worshipful Company.
I was honoured to have a window installed in Stationer’s Hall near St. Pauls and have produced windows for churches and public buildings in the UK, France , Romania and Jordan. Many of my windows have ended up in churches in my local Diocese of Canterbury.
My work methods involve drawing, photography and exploring ideas through reading, writing and print making.
In order to extend my knowledge I am in the middle of a three year course , studying the Byzantine style of icons with iconographer Peter Murphy. The techniques of gilding and layered egg tempera were traditionally used to reflect inner spiritual light. This seems to link with my love of light and I am finding the multi cultural influences of the Byzantine period inspiring. I have just gained my first icon commission.
